Full-Time Positions

Readers Services Librarian 

Salary Range:   A range of $20 to $23 per hour; offers made within this range are based on competencies, experience, and internal pay equity

Benefits:  Full benefits, including health, dental and vision insurance; life insurance; four weeks of vacation plus sick and personal leave; Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF) pension plan; and availability of 457(b)/Roth retirement savings plan 

Hours:  37.5 hours/week (full-time); hours include mornings, afternoons, evenings, and weekends

As a member of the Adult Services Department, the Readers Services Librarian is responsible for keeping in touch with current popular culture, and trends. Strong technology skills are required, as is the ability to provide assistance to patrons.

Core job functions include: 

  • Plans and conducts programs and book discussions for adults.
  • Integrates the library’s web offerings and guides the library’s virtual services efforts, including, but not limited to, blogs, podcasting, RSS, online gaming, and other web-related technologies.
  • Provides reference and readers advisory services.
  • Assists patrons with the use of the Internet and computer software programs.

Required qualifications:   

  • Master’s degree in Library Science or Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution.
  • Proficiency in the use of personal computer technologies, including desktops, laptops, tablets, and Internet applications.
  • Experience with digital media software and familiarity with Windows, Mac, and mobile platforms/environments.
  • One year or more of library experience working with the public preferred.

Part-Time Positions

Library Page

This is a part-time position (average 11-13 hours per week) which will require working a flexible schedule including mornings, afternoons, evenings, and weekends in the Circulation/Outreach Services Department as a Library Page.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Shelves library materials in correct locations and maintains shelving areas so patrons and staff can locate materials.
  • Straightens shelves, shifts materials and cleans, as needed.
  • Answers directional questions from patrons.
  • Shifts and discards old issues of magazines and newspapers.
  • Searches for materials on shelves as directed.
  • Processing of new materials received in the library.
  • May represent the library at community events.
  • Cooperates as a team member with the library staff in performing any duties essential to the achievement of effective library operations.

Contacts outside of immediate department:

  • Patrons, other departments, schools, community groups.

Physical demands:

  • Must be able to reach, remove, and replace materials on the top shelf of circulating collection of book stacks (84 inches high) and on all shelves below this height.
  • Must be able to push a fully loaded cart weighing up to 200 pounds.
  • Frequent bending, lifting, reaching (including overhead reaching), and carrying objects weighing up to 25 pounds for short distances.
  • Frequent periods of standing.
  • Occasional repetitive motion.

Minimum qualifications:

  • One year of high school required.
  • Ability to express self well in English, both orally and in writing, required.

Circulation/Outreach Assistant

 Hours/week:                     14 hours / week

 Current Schedule:           We are looking for a candidate who has a flexible schedule to help cover morning, afternoon, and evening shifts. The schedule will include:

  • A minimum of one evening shift per week.
  • Saturdays (on a rotational basis): 9:00 a.m. – 5:05 p.m.
  • Sundays (on a rotational basis) 12:45 p.m.-5:05 p.m.

Salary:                                  $16.00 / hour

Job duties include:

  • Assists patrons at the service desks. Duties include, but are not limited to, circulating library materials, issuance of library cards, answering telephones, and collecting fines and fees.
  • Provides direct assistance to patrons with information regarding library materials, computer catalogs, electronic resources, the Internet, equipment, and services.
  • Receives and physically processes requests from patrons for library materials available from this library’s automation system and OCLC.
  • Distributes incoming mail.
  • Assists Department Head with outreach activities and represents the library at community events.
  • Processes donated materials for inclusion in the collection, outreach giveaways, or book fundraisers.
  • May create and maintain book displays.
  • May serve as Passport Acceptance Agent.
  • May shelve library materials in correct locations and maintain shelving areas so patrons and staff can locate materials.
  • Cooperates as a team member with the library staff in performing any duties essential to the achievement of effective library operations.

 Minimum qualifications:

  • High school diploma required.
  • Competency in MS Office products required.
  • Ability to express self well in English, both orally and in writing, required.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution preferred.
  • One to two years of customer service experience preferred.
  • Fluent Spanish language skills preferred

Public Services Associate in Youth Services

Salary:  $17.00 per hour

Hours/week:  25 hours per week

The Villa Park Public Library seeks a versatile, service-oriented person to be our new Public Services Associate for Youth Services. We are looking for a self-starter who is energetic, organized, and committed to providing excellent and equitable service to patrons of all ages, especially youth. Strong technology skills are a must, as is the ability to provide assistance both one-on-one and in a group setting.

The job includes planning and conducting programs for youth and families, and working at our Service Desks. Typical desk duties are answering reference questions, readers’ advisory services, homework help, and providing computer support/troubleshooting. Programming duties include planning, preparing for, and conducting programs, such as story times for young children and families, and handling program registrations with patrons. Also required are circulation responsibilities such as: checking items in and out, assisting patrons with accounts, and issuing library cards. Additional duties may include creating and maintaining booklists and displays, and special projects as assigned.

Hours:  The Public Services Associate position averages 25 hours a week. The position requires the following shifts every week: 22 hours scheduled from Monday-Friday every week, subject to change with the needs of the library; one Saturday shift every fourth week from 9 am–5 pm; and one Sunday shift every fourth week from 12:45–5 pm during the months of October through April.

Qualifications:  A Bachelor’s degree is preferred. Preference will be given to candidates who have previous work experience with children and families, or in education or customer service with people of all ages. Those who speak Spanish are also strongly encouraged to apply.
