Extended Study Hours

The Villa Park Public Library is providing a designated study space for high school students to study for exams, June 3-4, 5:00-10:00 p.m. Computers and internet access will available.

Students must arrive before 9:00 p.m. The Library will remain open until 10:00 p.m. Students will not be allowed to re-enter the building once they have left. High school students should be prepared to show a valid student ID, but do not need to live in Villa Park to take advantage of the study hours.

Students may study alone or with friends. Free snacks and beverages will be provided. Library staff will be on hand to assist students with research.

Have Book — Will Travel…Through Space and Time

The Library’s Adult Services Department is launching its 2013 Summer Reading Program Have Book — Will Travel…Through Time and Space on Tuesday, May 28. Patrons can track their summer reading for the chance to win prizes. The purpose of the program is to celebrate and encourage the love of reading.

Patrons may earn additional chances to win prizes by reading a book from one of the theme areas: space travel fiction or time travel fiction. Additional chances may also be earned by attending a book discussion or another Adult Services program. For a listing of programs being offered, visit our web site at www.vppl.info.

Registration for the Summer Reading Program begins Tuesday May 28, and the program ends Saturday, August 3. This program is free to all Villa Park Public Library cardholders. For more information, call the Readers Advisory Department at

Grant Money for Young People Helping Others

Disney Friends for Change Grants offer young change-makers an opportunity to receive a $1,000 grant to help make a lasting, positive change in the world.

They’re looking for projects that highlight the creativity and commitment of young people working to meet the needs of others, showing how even small actions can add up to big changes.

Youth ages 5-18 are eligible to apply for a $1,000 grant. (Note: Legally, if you are younger than 13, you must have someone older than 13 prepare and submit the application for you.) The deadline for applications is February 10, 2013.

Remembering Jane Austen

In celebration of the 200^th anniversary of the publication of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, the Villa Park Public Library will feature an Austen related film festival and a program featuring the distinguished author.

For the film series, doors open at 6:30 p.m., with the movies beginning promptly at 6:45 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

The first movie in the series will be held Wednesday, January 30 and is a 2005 film, featuring Keira Knightley, which retells the story of a classic Austen novel.

The second movie will be held Wednesday, February 20 and is a Bollywood update on a classic Austen tale.

The final movie of the series will be held Wednesday, March 20 and is a story that transports the viewer back to 1795 into the life of a young Jane Austen and features Anne Hathaway as Jane.

On April 17, Jane Austen Speaks will be held at 7:00 p.m. Debra Ann Miller will take on the persona of Austen and discuss her life as a literary woman. Registration is required for this program.

In addition, the library collection is host to numerous works by and about Austen including books, CD audiobooks and DVDs.
