Public Services Associate in Youth Services

The Villa Park Public Library seeks a versatile, reliable, service-oriented individual to become our new Public Services Associate in Youth Services. Join a team that is committed to providing a high level of service to the public, and works with patrons of all ages. We are looking for active self-starters who have genuine interest in working with youth and families.

The job includes a variety of duties, primarily working at our Information Desk and planning/conducting programs for youth. Typical desk duties include answering reference questions, providing readers’ advisory services, homework help, and technology support/troubleshooting. Programming duties include planning and conducting programs for children and families, such as story times for young children and families, and assisting with program registrations and preparations. Additional duties may include creating and maintaining booklists and displays, and special projects as assigned.

Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree. Preference will be given to candidates who have previous work experience with children and families.

The Public Services Associate in Youth Services position averages 17.9 hours a week.  It requires the following shifts each week: on Wednesdays from 8:45 am-12:00 pm, Thursdays from 1:00-9:00 pm, and Fridays from 1:00-5:00 pm. There is also one (1) shift every fourth week on Saturdays from 8:45 am-5:00 pm, and one (1) shift every other Sunday from 12:45-5:00 pm. Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, there are no Sunday shifts.

Starting wage is $13.65/hour, depending on qualifications.

Part Time Position

Computer Services Assistant

Hours/week:          15 hours / week on average

Schedule:                3 four-hour shifts on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday

                                 1 three-hour shift rotating between Friday and Saturday

Salary:                       $12.25 / hour

The Villa Park Public Library is currently looking for a tech savvy, customer service oriented candidate with the ability to demonstrate and explain technology to patrons.

Responsibilities include:

  • Monitoring Adult Services and Youth Services computer stations.
  • Assisting patrons with technology and wireless connectivity.
  • Troubleshooting minor technology-related problems
  • Assisting with other projects as assigned.

Minimum qualifications: 

  • High school diploma (College degree preferred)
  • Proficiency in common computer applications, including MS Office suite
  • One year of related computer support experience
  • One year of customer service experience
  • Ability to express self well in English, both orally and in writing, required
  • Fluent Spanish language skills preferred

Part Time Position

Circulation/Outreach Assistant

Hours/week:          14 hours / week

Current Schedule: We are looking for a candidate who has a flexible schedule to help cover morning, afternoon, and evening shifts.

                                    Saturdays (on a rotational basis) 12:00–5:05 pm

                                    Sundays (on a rotational basis) 12:45–5:05 pm                    

Salary:                       $11.02 / hour

Job duties include:

  • Checking library materials in and out for patrons
  • Collecting fines and fees
  • Issuing and renewing library cards
  • Maintaining patron database
  • Answering telephone and transferring incoming calls to appropriate departments and staff
  • Directing patrons to appropriate areas in the library
  • Assisting patrons with locating materials within the online catalog and on the shelves
  • Troubleshooting computer issues with library patrons
  • Participating in community outreach events
  • Cooperating as a team member with the library staff in performing any duties essential to the achievement of effective library operations

Minimum qualifications: 

  • High school diploma (College degree preferred)
  • One to two years of customer service experience preferred
  • Ability to express self well in English, both orally and in writing, required
  • Fluent Spanish language skills preferred
