Temporary Public Services Librarian

$16.50-$17.50/ hour, depending on qualifications

Description:

The Villa Park Public Library seeks a versatile, service-oriented person to work as our Temporary Public Services Librarian through September 2019. We are seeking someone energetic, organized, and excited about working with patrons of all ages.

The job includes working at our Information Desks. Typical desk duties are providing one-on-one assistance, answering reference questions, and providing computer support/troubleshooting. Strong technology skills are necessary, as is the ability to provide assistance one-on-one and negotiate multiple demands at the same time.

Candidates must have a Master’s degree in Library Science or Information Science from an ALA-accredited college or university. Two years of experience working in a public library is desired. Preference will be given to candidates with a background in technology or education. Those who have previous work experience with children and families are also encouraged to apply.

Currently, the Temporary Public Services Librarian position averages 26.49 hours a week. The position requires the following shifts every week: 1:00–9:00 pm on Mondays and Thursdays; 9 am–5 pm on Fridays; and 9:00 am –5:00 pm every other week on Saturdays. Starting in September, there is also one shift every other week on Sundays from 1:00–5:00 pm. Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, there are no Sunday shifts.

Part Time Position

Circulation/Outreach Assistant

Hours/week:    14 hours / week

Current Schedule:     We are looking for a candidate who has a flexible schedule to help cover morning, afternoon, and evening shifts.

(June – August 10, 2019)

Mondays 8:45-1 pm

Thursdays 8:45-1 pm

Fridays 9-12 pm

Saturdays (on a rotational basis) 12:00–5:05 pm

Sundays (on a rotational basis) 12:45–5:05 pm

After August 10, 2019 – to be determined

Salary:  $11.02 / hour

Job duties include:

  • Checking library materials in and out for patrons
  • Collecting fines and fees
  • Issuing and renewing library cards
  • Maintaining patron database
  • Answering telephone and transferring incoming calls to appropriate departments and staff
  • Directing patrons to appropriate areas in the library
  • Assisting patrons with locating materials within the online catalog and on the shelves
  • Troubleshooting computer issues with library patrons
  • Participating in community outreach events
  • Cooperating as a team member with the library staff in performing any duties essential to the achievement of effective library operations

Minimum qualifications: 

  • High school diploma (College degree preferred)
  • One to two years of customer service experience preferred
  • Ability to express self well in English, both orally and in writing, required
  • Fluent Spanish language skills preferred

A Bachelor’s degree or comparable education is preferred.  Previous experience working with the general public is desired. Preference will be given to candidates with a background in technology or education. Those who have previous work experience with children and families are also encouraged to apply.

Currently, the Temporary Public Services Assistant position averages 26.49 hours a week. The position requires the following shifts every week: 1:00–9:00 pm on Mondays and Thursdays; and 9:00 am–5:00 pm on Fridays. There is also one shift every other Saturday from 9:00 am–5:00 pm. Starting in September, there is one shift every other Sunday from 1:00–5:00 pm. Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, there are no Sunday shifts.
