In preparation for October’s Teen Read Week (October 17-23) at the Villa Park Public Library, check out the new display of materials in the High School area of the Library. You’ll find a variety of materials (books, audiobooks, movies) that fall under this year’s Teen Read Week theme, “Books with Beat @ your library.” This broad theme includes music, poetry, audio books, crime beat, street lit, beat generation, books that make your heart beat, and more. Stop by and see what we have to offer you.

As we get closer to Teen Read Week, keep checking this space for more information about our “Movies with Beat” Film Festival (October 21-23), featuring movies picked by you, the Teen cardholders at Villa Park Public Library!

The Help is the story of three brave women in Jackson, Mississippi during the 1960s.

A twenty-two year old white woman nicknamed Skeeter faces her discontent regarding the way in which the “colored” help are treated by her friends and family by deciding to write a book on the subject.

Enlisting the aid of her friend Elizabeth’s maid, Aibileen and Aibileen’s best friend Minny, she learns the stories of roughly a dozen black women who are struggling to make ends meet and raise their own families while tending to a white family.

Through the journey of writing, the three women realize they are more similar than different.

The author contends, “Wasn’t that the point of the book? For women to realize, We are just two people. Not that much separates us. Not nearly as much as I’d thought.”

What Hurts: Finding Quality Health Information

There are many sources for information about health and illness, but some have helpful and accurate information and some offer information or advice that is incorrect or even dangerous. On Wednesday, September 1, 2010, at 7:00 pm, the Villa Park Public Library will present a program entitled Your WHAT Hurts? Finding Quality Health Information.

This interactive session, will be presented by Debra Kakuk Smith, Associate Professor and Health Sciences Librarian at College of DuPage,who will show you how to locate and evaluate both print and electronic health information and will also provide tips for improving communication with health care providers.
