Dark Currents

Posted December 21, 2012 | Posted in Readers Advisory,What We're Reading

Dark Currents by Jacqueline Carey is an urban fantasy set in the small town of Pemkowet, Michigan where the line between the mortal & paranormal realms runs thin.  Daisy Johanssen, half-demon & half-human, works part-time for the local police department as a file clerk while serving as an agent of Hel, the goddess that controls the paranormal realm.  When a college student is found dead in the river, Daisy must partner with Officer Cody Fairfax, a police investigator & a werewolf, to investigate the death.  Because there is a seamier aspect that begins to develop in the middle of the book, what appeared to be almost a young adult story, turned into a more mature themed novel.  Daisy sometimes gets stuck in revisiting her high school days but readers may identify with her struggles to control her demonish traits and her need to fit in with the humans she lives and works with.
