During the coming concert season, the Villa Park Public Library will offer several Concert Chats designed to offer area residents a chance to learn about the music to be offered in concert by the New Philharmonic Orchestra at the McAninch Arts Center on the College of DuPage campus.

On Monday, September 20, the first of these Concert Chats will be presented in preparation for the Orchestra’s concerts on October 1 and 2. At these concerts the New Philharmonic will present the delightful work by Prokofieff that is based upon of the children’s story of Peter and the Wolf. This composition is always an audience favorite, appealing to all ages.

The musical guide for the Concert Chat evening will be Janey Sarther of the Arts Center, who presented the very well-received introduction to classical music at the Library in January 2010. Knowing what to expect and what to listen for in any performance greatly enhances the listener’s enjoyment of the music. Come to the Villa Park Library on September 20 to hear Janey present our first “Concert Chat” and discuss this very special upcoming concert.

Those attending our Concert Chats will receive special ticket offers for the concerts. Please call the Library Check Out Desk at 630 834-1164 to register for this program.

Little Orphan Annie’s Vintage Radio Program

Posted September 7, 2010 | Posted in Press Releases

Vintage Radio Program

Little Orphan Annie appeared in comic strips for 86 years—until mid-June 2010. Annie was also the heroine of the first late-afternoon children’s serial radio program, sponsored by The Wander Company, which manufactured Ovaltine in their Villa Park factory. The curly-haired waif was also the inspiration for the Broadway musical “Annie” and the subsequent musical movie.

On Sunday, September 29, 2010, at 2:00 pm, the Those Were The Days Radio Players (West) will present a custom program, created especially for the Library, using original scripts and hand-created sound effects from Little Orphan Annie children’s radio program series, which was broadcast from 1930-1942. The program was famous for offering various incentives and write-for prizes for the listeners. The Villa Park Historical Society has in their collection a number of these giveaways and incentive pieces.

The Those Were the Days Radio Players have presented vintage radio shows at the Library at least yearly for a number of years, and they have a dedicated following in Villa Park. Don’t miss this delightful and nostalgic Sunday afternoon experience, which is also very much a part of Villa Park’s cultural history.

Please call the Check Out Desk at 630 834-1164 to register for this program.
