Should this book be banned?

Posted September 23, 2014 | Posted in Readers Advisory,Uncategorized

In my family there is no such thing as a bad book, so banned books and those never challenged to me have always been just one and the same. This makes picking just one banned book so hard, but the series with the most influence on my life thus far is Harry Potter. In ways big like staying up way too late to stand in line at Borders with my Dad to get the latest book the minute to the small of laughing over a joke only Harry Potter readers would understand, Harry, Ron, and Hermione and the rest were all an active part of my childhood. In addition to being an entertaining story that takes the reader to a world so different than ours, but yet made so tangible by Rowling, Harry Potter also presents themes that show the reader that love is key and happiness can always be found even in the hardest of times. That these seven books created such an impact on my life those of many other around the world or all different, ages, genders and races is why I find it so unimaginable that someone would want to ban Harry Potter. At what point do we stop judging a book for its merits and start allowing fun and fantasy to be just that? If we were to ban all stories that present an alternative to the reality we live because it might cause children to believe then there would be no Peter Pan, Santa, or Cinderella.

So, I leave you to think on that and these wise words of Albus Dumbledore….“Words are, in my not-so-humble opinion, our most inexhaustible source of magic. Capable of both inflicting injury, and remedying it.”
